You see her laughing with friends on FaceTime. But later, you hear her crying in the shower.
You tell yourself it’s just teen moods.
But in your gut, you wonder if something deeper is going on.
As a coach who has worked with teen girls for over 25 years, I want to tell you this: you’re not overreacting, and you’re not imagining it. A teen girl that is overhwlemed often hides behind smiles, sarcasm, or silence. And while some stress is part of growing up, there are signs that go beyond “normal” teen ups and downs.
Here’s what to look for.
What’s the difference between normal stress and BEING OVERWHELMED?
- Stress is tied to a specific situation (like a test or a fight with a friend). When the situation passes, so does the stress.
- Being overwhelmed sticks around. It loops in her mind, keeps her awake at night, and shows up in her body (stomachaches, headaches, racing heart) even when nothing is “wrong.”
If you’re seeing patterns that don’t go away with reassurance, it may be more than stress.
7 signs your daughter BEING OVERWHELMED isn’t just a phase
1. She avoids things she used to love.
Basketball, art class, youth group — suddenly she has excuses not to go.
2. She overthinks simple decisions.
What to wear, what to text back, whether to order fries or a salad — she spirals until she’s frozen.
3. Her body tells the story.
She complains of stomach aches, headaches, or feeling nauseous before school or social events.
4. Her moods swing hard.
She snaps at you over little things… then hides in her room to cry.
5. She can’t fall asleep.
Her brain won’t shut off. She’s up at 2 AM scrolling or staring at the ceiling.
6. She’s glued to her phone but feels more alone than ever.
She scrolls endlessly yet still says she has “no real friends.”
7. She hides how bad she feels — until it spills out.
Maybe in an outburst. Maybe in tears. Maybe in cutting herself down with words you know aren’t true.
When should moms get help?
If you’ve noticed two or more of these signs consistently, it’s time to pay attention.
You haven’t failed her — most moms miss the early signs because girls work so hard to look fine.
The good news? With the right tools and support, girls can move from being overwhelmed and withdrawn to confident and thriving — often faster than you’d think.
She doesn’t need fixing.
She needs to feel like herself again.
