Why Won’t My Teen Daughter Talk to Me? 5 Ways to Reopen the Conversation

You ask how her day was. She shrugs, grabs her phone, and disappears into her room.

You try again later, and she rolls her eyes or snaps, “I’m fine!”

But you know she’s not fine.

It hurts when your daughter won’t talk to you — especially when she used to share everything. As a coach who’s worked with teen girls for 25+ years, I want you to know: her silence doesn’t mean you’ve lost her. Often, it means she doesn’t know how to say what’s really going on.

Why do teens stop talking to their parents?

Fear of judgment.
She worries you’ll be disappointed or upset.

Exhaustion.
School, friends, social media — sometimes she just doesn’t have the energy.

Shame.
She feels like she “should” be handling things better.

Need for independence.
Pulling away is part of growing up, but it doesn’t mean she doesn’t want you.

5 ways to reopen the conversation

1. Start small.
Instead of “How was school?” try, “Did you see what happened on your favorite show?” A side-door question often opens the front door later.

2. Listen more, fix less.
Sometimes she just wants you to hear her without advice, judgment, or “here’s what you should do.”

3. Pick your moments.
Car rides, late nights, and doing chores together often work better than sitting her down for a “big talk.”

4. Share your own stories.
Telling her a little about your day — or even your own struggles as a teen — shows her vulnerability is safe with you.

5. Respect her space.
Pushing too hard makes her retreat further. Let her know you’re available, then give her room to come to you.

What moms often get wrong (and it’s not your fault)

Many moms try harder and harder to break down the wall — but sometimes, less is more. Reconnection isn’t about prying; it’s about creating safety.

Beneath the eye rolls is a girl who still longs for connection.
